Mug Monday Episode 17: Instagram Basics and Fundamentals

Good Morning Everyone! Welcome to Mug Monday! I’m Emily Dugal, Digital Marketing Manager at RE/MAX Leading Edge! If you’ve seen Mug Monday welcome back and if it’s your first time I’m excited to share my myriad of mugs and tips with you! This weeks mug is my Live Colorfully Mug.

Today we are going to talk about Instagram. I did a Mug Monday on following hashtags on Instagram because more and more agents are using it but then I realized that there are still many of you who don’t know the basics of this mobile social media platform and some ways to use it.

Instagram is about images. You can post a video on Instagram but it has to be less than a minute long. Although not where hashtags originated Instagram is the place to use them! Hashtag it up but be mindful and don’t trick people by  something completely unrelated to your post just to try and get in front of people.Instagram also allows you to filter your photos so you can see them through different lenses and make them look a bit artsy-er. It can also help with bad lighting if done right! You're also able to link up your Instagram to your Facebook and share anything you post on your Instagram to you Facebook with just the click of a button!

What Should Real Estate Agents Post on Instagram?

Instagram is great for posting some pics of your listings (you can do up to 10 photos at a time that people can then swipe through), acknowledging a holiday, posting a graphic with some a fun fact or tip and showing off your personality. Use the filters and different angels to get artsy.
I think of Instagram as a little more relaxed, fun and personality driven than Facebook so keep that in mind when posting!

Things You Can’t Do on Instagram

Here are a few things you can't do on Instagram to help you get a better idea of how to use it. You can’t post written words only. Everything must have an image and then you include a caption and hashtags. You aren’t able to post a video more than a minute long so this isn’t the place for your three minute long blog post. Clickable links are able to be added in the caption of your post. If you want to direct people to a specific page you can say “Check my bio for a link to more info,” and change up the link accordingly.
There’s no easy way to share on Instagram. Facebook is Share happy in my opinion. People are constantly sharing posts from other people but on Instagram you’ll need to download a third party app or screenshot which won’t allow credit to be given to the original poster.
