Mug Monday Episode 21: How to Shoot a Vlog, Part 3

Good Morning Everyone! Welcome to Mug Monday! I’m Emily Dugal, Digital Marketing Manager at RE/MAX Leading Edge! If you’ve seen Mug Monday welcome back and if it’s your first time I’m excited to share my myriad of mugs and tips with you! This week’s mug is my Hedwig Mug.

Today we will be discussing the actual execution shooting a vlog. You’ve got your concept, you’ve got your logo now it’s time to execute. If you are stationary for your vlogs you’ll want to get a stand to prop you phone up on, we use a Gorilla stand which you can find on Amazon for about $20. Under the stand I usually stack books so that I can get a good angle. Your videos should always be shot horizontally. If you are moving around do not use a stand like a Gorilla stand! The top piece is moveable so you can adjust and when you try and move with it the camera is shaking ever so slightly that you won’t realize till you watch your video backIf you need to move around with your phone either find someone with a steady hand or you can invest some money in a stabilizer which start a bit under $100.

Your Phone is definitely an option for shooting video but if you want to get better quality and give it a more polished look investing some money in a Go Pro is a great idea. They start at about $200 but you can do a lot with them.
I shoot my vlogs in the same place, my living room. It’s got some color, it’s light and bright and I’m comfortable. I don’t have to worry about noise or being interrupted and it goes with the feel of Mug Monday.I shoot my Mug Monday’s in clips. I work through the sections of my script and shoot them. Your video editor will be able to string them together. Sometimes I’ll shoot a read through and I won’t love it, I’ll shoot it again then just send it both along to the video editor to do what he thinks is best. I never watch my clips back. And I don’t delete a shoot unless I really messed something up. I just shoot them and send them.

When you go to shoot, hit the record button, and then count to 3 so you’re video doesn’t start with you talking while your arm is still extended from hitting the button. DO the same when you go to stop the video. You’ll need to write out a script (stay tuned for our next episode where we will dive into this deeper) with a consistent intro and exit and what you’re going to be talking about. The most important piece of advice! Stop judging yourself so harshly. I even need to take this advice. You’ll get better as time goes on and you are your harshest critic.
