The Power of the Mastermind

If you’re not a part of a Mastermind group, you’ve most likely heard of them by now.  It could have been at that “motivational speaker” event or an article or book you may have read.  Either way, you've heard the power of the mastermind. You probably thought to yourself that it’s either mumbo jumbo or the real deal that “I’ll put on the to-do list”.

Napoleon Hill described the Mastermind Alliance as, “A friendly alliance with one or more persons who will encourage one to follow through with both plan and purpose.”  He said when two people get together with a third mind, a “Master Mind” was created.

Let’s face it…the real estate business can be a lonely one.  You need to surround yourself first and foremost in an environment (e.g. brokerage) that inspires enthusiasm, growth and goodwill.  A mastermind group is the next step in ensuring you’re maximizing your personal and business potential.

Forming a mastermind is relatively easy.  Get your rear end out there and meet other like-minded agents!  Are you going to your brokerage’s national and regional events?  Are you part of a coaching community?  Are you actively involved with real estate agent Facebook groups?  You’ll find matching up with agents outside your market area proving more beneficial as agents will be more willing to share their most successful and proprietary strategies and tactics.

How many in a group?

In the several mastermind groups I’ve been a part of (successful and unsuccessful), I’ve found no more than 5-6 agents per group works best.  It’s important that all parties are equally committed to the group as you’ll be rewarded with a unique bond after months of sharing, confiding and consoling.  Too many peeps dilutes the camaraderie you’ll end up forming.

When and how often do you meet?

It will be up to you and your group’s focus.  If your focus is primarily sharing strategies and tactics, twice a month may be enough.  If you’re looking for added accountability, you’ll need to meet once a week.  Oh, and you don't need to meet in person…a conference call works fine and many free services exist like www.freeconferencecall.com.

How do you structure each meeting?

A great way to get started is to have all participants start by voicing a “win” they had since the last meeting.  The “wins” are followed by challenges which are then followed by commitments that need to be fulfilled by the next call.

 Jim Rohn said, “You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with”.   Elevate your mindset, strategy and skills…it’s time to Mastermind!
